History of Shahji Temple
Shahji Temple in Vrindavan has a rich history dating back to the 19th century.
Construction: The temple was built between 1860 and 1876 by Shah Kundan Lal and Shah Phundan Lal, two wealthy merchant brothers from Lucknow.
Architecture: Shahji Temple is renowned for its unique blend of Indian and European architectural styles, featuring 12 spiral columns made of white Italian marble, each standing 15 feet high.
Basanti Kamra: The temple's darbar hall, also known as Basanti Kamra or Rituraj Bhawan, is a highlight of the temple. It's adorned with Belgian glass chandeliers and intricate paintings, and is open only twice a year during Basant Panchami and Jhulan Yatra celebrations.
Unique Feature: The temple's founders are depicted in portraits on the floor, near the entrance, symbolizing their humility and saintliness. This unique gesture allows devotees to walk on the portraits, covering them with the sacred soil of Vrindavan.
