About Gopeshwar Mahadev Temple
The Gopeshwar Mahadev Temple in Vrindavan is one of the most revered and ancient temples, dedicated to Lord Shiva in his special form as a guardian of Vrindavan’s divine pastimes.
History Gopeshwar Mahadev Temple
According to tradition, when Lord Shiva desired to witness and participate in Rasa Lila (the divine dance of Lord Krishna with the Gopis), he was stopped at the entrance to Vrindavan, since only the Gopis were allowed to enter.
On the request of Shiva, Vrinda Devi (the presiding goddess of Vrindavan forests) blessed him and transformed him into a gopi (cowherd maiden).
In this form, Shiva entered the Rasa Lila and was accepted by Krishna with great love.
From then onwards, Lord Shiva became known as Gopeshwar Mahadev – the Lord who became a Gopi.
