About Radha Damodar Temple

Radha Damodar Temple is a revered Hindu temple dedicated to Radha and Krishna, located in Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh. This ancient temple, founded by Jiva Goswami in 1542, is one of the seven Goswami temples in Vrindavan and holds significant historical and spiritual value.

The Radha Damodar Temple is considered the spiritual heart of Vrindavan, often called “the hub of Gaudiya Vaishnavism.” It has been a center of devotion, learning, and inspiration for saints, scholars, and devotees for centuries.

History Radha Damodar Temple

The Radha Damodar Temple in Vrindavan has a rich history dating back to the 16th century. Here's a brief overview:

  • Establishment: The temple was founded by Srila Jiva Goswami in 1542, a prominent saint and philosopher in the Gaudiya Vaishnavism tradition.

  • Deity Manifestation: The deities of Radha Damodar were manifested by Srila Rupa Goswami, Jiva Goswami's uncle and guru, who gifted them to Jiva Goswami for worship.

  • Mughal Invasion: During Aurangzeb's invasion in 1670, the original deities were shifted to Jaipur for protection and were later returned to Vrindavan in 1739.

  • ISKCON Connection: The temple holds significance for ISKCON devotees, as Srila Prabhupada, the founder of ISKCON, spent six years here before heading to the United States to preach about Krishna.

  • Sacred Sites: The temple complex contains the samadhis of prominent Vaishnavite saints, including Rupa Goswami, Jiva Goswami, and Krishnadasa Kaviraja.

  • Temple Deities: Apart from Radha Damodar, the temple houses other deities, including Radha Vrindavanchandra, Radha Madhav, Gaur Nitai, Lord Jagannath, and the sacred Giriraj Shila with Krishna's footprints.
